What is the "Chatabi" Travel Tea Set, our top recommendation?

Chatabi is a portable tea set that combines a glass pot with a ceramic infuser. The infuser and three teacups nest inside the pot, and everything fits into a brocade drawstring pouch you can carry with you. The lid knob and the band around the pot are made of walnut, adding a soft, woody touch to the glass and ceramic. Because you can take it anywhere, we named it Chatabi, which means "tea journey" in Japanese.

When the tea reaches the strength you like, simply lift the infuser out of the pot. The leaves don't over-steep, so you can enjoy infusion after infusion, just as Taiwanese tea is meant to be enjoyed. Watching the leaves unfurl and the color of the tea through the glass is another pleasure of this set.

Chatabi has also been featured in the Japanese travel guidebook Mapple Taiwan '27.

Tall or wide: which should I choose?

The tall and wide types hardly differ in pot capacity or overall weight. Both are made of glass, ceramic and walnut, and both are the same price. Choose the one you like best by how it feels in your hand, the shape of the teacups, and the color.

Tall Wide
Shape Slender and upright Low and stable
Pot capacity 205 ml 190 ml
Pot size 7.5 cm diameter, 11 cm high 9.5 cm diameter, 9 cm high
Teacups 27 ml, 5 cm diameter, 4 cm high 25 ml, 6 cm diameter, 2 cm high
Total weight 340 g 348 g
Colors White / Celadon White / Celadon

The slender tall type comes with deeper teacups. The stable wide type comes with shallow, wide-rimmed teacups that let you take your time admiring the color of the tea. We hope you find the shape and color that suit you, whether white or celadon.

When can I use Chatabi?

Pack it for a trip or a visit home and enjoy a relaxing moment at your hotel. Bring it to a friend's house along with some tea leaves, and you can brew right there and share a cup of hospitality. On a pleasant day, it is also lovely for brewing in the park or on a picnic.

For almost all of our teas, we visit the growers and confirm each year's weather and finish before choosing them. We make no adjustments to even out flavor or aroma. Spring and winter teas will never taste the same; we bring you each season's tea just as it turned out. A cup brewed somewhere new can become a chance to talk about "how this year's tea smelled."

How to brew Taiwanese tea with Chatabi

  1. Put tea leaves in the infuser and set it in the pot.
  2. Pour in hot water, put on the lid and wait.
  3. When the tea reaches the strength you like, lift out the infuser.
  4. Pour the tea into the teacups. For the second infusion, return the infuser and add hot water again.

The amount of leaves, water temperature and steeping time vary from tea to tea. Please use the "Recommended brewing" section on each tea's product page as a guide. To learn how the aroma changes over successive infusions, see our article "How Many Infusions Can You Enjoy with Taiwanese Tea?"

New teaware for your tea table at home

For unhurried tea time at home, we have also added new teapots and teacups.

  • Teapots: 【朱玉 - Red Glaze Teapot】, with a glossy vermilion glaze and a black lid, and two walnut-colored teapots finished with a glaze mixed with plant ash.
  • Teacups & saucers: Four walnut-colored teacups, plus walnut-colored, metal and ceramic saucers. Changing the pairing of cup and saucer changes the whole look of the table.
  • Tea trays: Five tea trays in different shapes, including round and oval.
  • Glass teaware: 【澄心 - Glass Gaiwan】, which lets you watch the leaves unfurl, and two glass fairness pitchers.

FAQ

Q. What is included in the Chatabi Travel Tea Set?

A. The set includes one glass pot, one ceramic infuser, three teacups and one brocade drawstring pouch for carrying. The teacups and infuser fit inside the pot.

Q. What is the difference between the tall and wide types?

A. The main differences are the shape and the teacups. The tall type is upright, with a 205 ml pot and deeper teacups (27 ml). The wide type is low, with a 190 ml pot and shallow, wide-rimmed teacups (25 ml). Since capacity and weight are nearly the same, please choose by the shape and color you prefer. Both are US$55.

Q. How many infusions can I brew with Chatabi?

A. Because you lift out the infuser once the tea reaches the strength you like, the leaves don't over-steep and you can enjoy many infusions in a row. How many depends on the tea.

Q. Can I use a dishwasher or microwave?

A. The set cannot be used in a dishwasher or microwave.

Q. Which teas go well with Chatabi?

A. Because you brew with the ceramic infuser, you can use CHA-EN's loose-leaf teas, such as oolong and black tea, as they are. If you are unsure, we recommend starting with Jin Xuan Oolong, with its soft aroma.
